Project Overview
Liddiard Scaffolding was proud to provide a bespoke scaffolding solution for Wantage Hall in Reading. Our work supported essential roofing repairs while protecting the building’s historic character.
Wantage Hall is a Grade II listed, Neo‑Tudor style building. It opened in 1908 as the University of Reading’s first hall of residence. Since then, it has been home to generations of students. During WWI, it became a Royal Flying Corps training base. Later, in WWII, it served as the RAF Reserve Command Headquarters.
The Challenge
Working on a listed building brings unique challenges. We needed to provide full roof access while protecting every architectural feature.
Wantage Hall is built from striking red brick with stone dressings. It features leaded‑light windows and a prominent clock‑tower entrance. All these elements had to remain untouched. At the same time, our scaffolding had to meet strict heritage building regulations.
Our Solution
We designed a custom scaffolding system that:
• Offered safe and efficient access for roofing teams.
• Protected delicate historic features during all stages of work.
• Allowed repairs to progress with minimal disruption to university life.
• Fully complied with heritage preservation standards.
By combining traditional scaffolding expertise with modern safety practices, we created a solution that respected the past while supporting essential restoration.
Results
The scaffolding has enabled roofing works to progress smoothly and on schedule. Wantage Hall will soon benefit from improved weatherproofing, ensuring it continues to serve the University of Reading community while retaining its historic character.
