Norney Grange – Full Re-roofing & External Refurbishment Project

We recently completed the full re-roofing and external refurbishment of the stunning Norney Grange, built in 1897. This complex project required a tailored scaffolding solution to meet the unique challenges of working on a historic property.

Project Overview:

To provide weather protection and safe access to the entire property, we installed a full Temporary Roof. However, several design challenges had to be addressed, including the presence of French drains and restrictions on securing scaffolding to the building.

Scaffolding Solution:

Given the limited space for cranage and construction, we chose an Apex Pitched Temporary Roof system covered with TIN CI sheets. This method allowed us to efficiently cover the property while working within the site’s constraints.

Since we couldn’t tie the scaffolding directly to the building, we erected Buttress Scaffolds along the full length of the front and rear. These structures were carefully designed to account for the French drain system and the weaker ground areas. To stabilise the scaffold and prevent uplift during high winds, we installed approximately 40 tons of Kentledge (counterweight).

Design Highlights:

We designed the Temporary Roof to clear the large stone chimneys while keeping it as low as possible, reducing the risk of high winds affecting the structure.
We provided access to seven chimneys, each standing up to 5 meters above the roof. These chimneys required customised scaffolding designs due to the condition of the surrounding stonework and roof structure.

Project Details:

Building Perimeter: 138.00m with 5 scaffold lifts
Height to Underside of Temporary Roof: 10.00m
Height of Temporary Roof Apex: Approx. 13.50m
Temporary Roof Span: 17.50m (narrowing to 10.50m)
Temporary Roof Area: 670.00m², requiring around 540 Tin Sheets

Our senior site supervisor expertly managed the logistics of material deliveries and collections, ensuring smooth operations while considering the nearby occupied properties.

This project showcases our ability to provide customised, safe, and efficient scaffolding solutions, even in the most challenging environments.
